In the Pequim Olympics, when Michael Phelps entered in the water, he realized something was wrong with his glasses - somehow there was water inside his glasses, and it kept coming in as he swam. ⁠

He could not see anything. ⁠
⁠
For most of the world class swimmers, not being able to see how far he was to the wall, would mean failure. How can you know how much you need to swim until you turn without seeing the end of the pool?⁠
⁠
But, Phelps was calm. ⁠
⁠
As all the things he does when swimming, he was just following a process. He was prepared to it.⁠
⁠
As his coach says, he is the best in terms of visualization. ⁠
⁠
He had once swam in the dark, and he also got mentally prepared for possible challenges, just like this one. ⁠
⁠
When he faced the challenge, he choose which process to follow, as he had mentally rehearsed how to proceed when that happened. ⁠
⁠
When he finished that race, he took his glasses off, he could read world record. ⁠
⁠
All of this only happened because he got ready for it. His mind was ready to face it. ⁠
⁠

Mental barriers are the things our mind blocks us from doing and accepting. We do not jump close to a cliff because our mind blocks us. It identify it as something dangerous. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Just like seeing Messi in a Juve jersey (a Madrid would be even worse) and @cristiano in a Barcelona jersey, we make many other things to sound weird in our mind. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
We create perceptions all the time, and the stronger these convictions are, the less likely we are to do the opposite (like jumping close to a cliff). ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
In the Winner Mindset Blueprint I talk a lot about beliefs and how they work, and these mental barriers are very similar to it, but we often refer to mental barriers as being bad things. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
They can make you succesful when you make bad things (things you should not do) as being extremely wrong. When you create this on your mind, you are going to avoid them no matter what. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
For this reason, when you want to get away from something (like stop eating sugar) you should put more effort in changing the image of sugar you have in your mind, instead of making a huge effort to stop doing something you like. ⁠⠀

Notice the difference: ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
I need to stop eating sugar. I am not having this chocolate today. I can do it.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
I hate damaging my body. I hate fat. I dont care about this. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
It is extreme. But I guarantee to you the second option is much more effective. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Besides this. even if the 1st option works for you, you are wasting your willpower, as you have a limited supply. ⁠⠀

When you play a sport, you are often required to give up on many things and if you do not achieve a good level or team by the age of 20, you are often seen as a failure. ⁠⠀

However, at this stage you are extremely young yet, and there are thousands of opportunities for you out there. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
If you are not playing at the level you which you were, you still have time to get there. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
If you want to try new things, you still have plenty of time to try them.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
If you wanna achieve something in the next months/years, you need to invest your time, energy and money into this thing. ⁠⠀

Do not be afraid to fail. This is the best time you have to try new things. ⁠⠀

Recently, some newspaper have noticed that he is suffering from anxiety. Real Madrid have posted a note saying that it is not true. ⁠⠀

Although there are a lot of research and knowledge about the human mind, psychology and topics like depression and anxiety, a lot of people still view this as being weak or an excuse, and a club would not want one of their players to look like this. ⁠⠀

My point is not saying Real Madrid did or did not try to hide something, or if he has anxiety or not. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
My point is that IF he really is going a tough phase, he needs support, and once he overcome this, his performance will become as great as it was before. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
A lot of players face this, and it is very important to look for help when you can't perform in your sport or general life because of depression or anxiety. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
You are not alone, and most of the people will face this at some stage of their life. What will define you is how you face it. ⁠⠀

What scenario will you perform better? When your opponent fear you or when you fear your opponent? ⠀

The only difference between these two options is how you approach to the competition. If your opponent looks at you and sees someone without confidence, with bad expressions and lost in the game, he will never fear you. ⠀

If you show signs of confidence, it will not only make him to respect you more, sometimes even fear you, but it will also help you to feel more confident about yourself. ⠀

When competing, remember: your opponent also has emotions, and the way he sees you can change the way he plays against you. ⠀

In this experiment, 150 college students performed exercises in order to measure how mental training techniques could enhance their performance.⁠

The graphic shows their average performance for different activites before (A) and after (B) using a mental training tool (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).⁠

As you can see in the graphic, there was one single tool that helped them the most: the tool 6. After using this tool, their performance increased by 40%.⁠

It is important to say they were not using these tools frequently, and most of them were not familiar with the exercises that they were asked to perform.⁠
